15th Anniversary Celebration of Poetry in motion

In collaboration with the Poetry Society of America, the Museum hosts a reading to celebrate the 15th anniversary of New York's Poetry in Motion program, which features poems on posters in MTA subways and buses. Three nationally recognized poets who have been featured in Poetry in Motion, Edward Field, Marie Ponsot, and Hal Sirowitz, will read their own work as well as favorites from the program.

Third Avenue closes to traffic and celebrates all things German during the lively annual Oktoberfest. Expect singing, dancing and sampling of a fine selection of German lagers. This 5th annual celebration of New York City's architecture offers behind-the-scenes access to significant buildings and sites. Led by Robert W. Lobenstein, general superintendent, New York City Transit, we'll visit a historic substation in Brooklyn, one of many colossal powerhouses that convert electricity to the 600 volts of DC current needed to move the subway.

Moses makes Movies: Bridges and Tunnels to the World of tomorrow

Laura Rosen, administrator of the MTA Bridges and Tunnels Special Archive, will screen and discuss two films released in 1967:Three Decades of Service, the history of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority under Robert Moses, and Once upon a Dump, which shows how Moses, then City parks commissioner, transformed the huge Corona dump in Queens into Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
