Manhattan Island Marathon Swim 2008

05 July 2008
Each summer, as New York gets hot and sticky, the spectacular annual Manhattan Island Marathon Swim offers a way to cool down for all those crazy enough to attempt a 28.5 mile marathon through the murky waters of the Hudson River.
Anyone with any knowledge of the river, whether first-hand or from the movies, will be suspicious to say the least about the contents of a river that flows past Manhattan, the Bronx and Jersey City. Indeed, organisers of the race warn of "random jetsam and flotsam in the waterways" and, this being a shipping lane, swimmers are likely to come disconcertingly close to large vessels including cruise ships. Thankfully however, new anti-pollution laws mean that the river is cleaner now than it has been in more than a century.
But it's not just the river that is cause for concern, in 2001 the race was stopped twice due to lightning, thunder and torrential rain. All swimmers were forced to return to their escort boats to wait out the storm.
Despite the difficulties the event remains surprisingly popular. The course starts and finishes at South Cove in Battery Park City on the Hudson River, just south of the North Cove Yacht Harbour. Swimmers head south around the tip of Manhattan, then north up the East River, counter-clockwise around Manhattan Island. They swim north into the Harlem River, through Spuyten Duyvil, and then south down the Hudson River back to Battery Park City.

The ethereal Tribute in Light memorial was designed to help lessen the aching loss felt across the country since 9/11. It is a profound symbol of strength, hope and resiliency. |
New Yankee Stadium is the working title for a new stadium for the New York Yankees, currently under construction. It will open in 2009, replacing the third-oldest stadium in the Major Leagues. |

In popular culture 'The Bronx' has often symbolized violence, decay, and urban ruin. In fact, there are guidebooks that say you must never go to the Bronx! Sheer ignorance, that is all we have to say!
