NBC and ABC Summer Concerts

Every year ABC and NBC studios conduct free summer concerts featuring some of the heavyweights in the recording and entertainment industry. These concerts are usually held on Friday mornings at 8.30 am. ABC's favorite venue is Bryant Park, and NBC's is the Plaza in Rockefeller center.

New York Philharmonic

Every year, Philharmonic in the Parks offers performances at parks in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Long Island. While this offers an opportunity for the uninitiated to get a taste of classical music, more importantly it's an opportunity to gather with friends and enjoy drinks, snacks and conversation with the New York Philharmonic providing a soundtrack.

Metropolitan Opera Summer Recitals

The Met’s annual concerts in New York City parks are one of the most beloved summer traditions in the city. This year, the company will present a six-performance series of recitals in the parks of all five boroughs. The Met also offers "FREE screenings of some of its most famous operas at Lincoln Center Plaza. The Summer Recital Series kicks off with a concert at Central Park SummerStage on July 13, featuring Tony Award winner Paulo Szot, rising opera singers Lisette Oropesa and Alek Shrader. Actor/conductor Damon Gupton, a Juilliard graduate, will host several of the concerts. All performances in the Summer Recital Series are free and no tickets are required, except for the concert at SummerStage which requires tickets even though they are free.

Naumburg Orchestral Concerts

Since 1905, the Naumburg Orchestral Concerts has continuously presented free, outdoor classical music concerts to New Yorkers of all walks of life. Named after founder and philanthropist Elkan Naumburg, who donated the Naumburg Bandshell to New York City in 1923, and inspired by his own love of music, the series seeks to stimulate and encourage new and expanded audiences for classical music in the informal and beautiful setting of Central Park.

Washington Square Music Festival

In June and July of 2009, the Washington Square Music Festival, a free outdoor classical and Music of the Americas concert series, is celebrating its 50th season by presenting five evenings of great music under the stars performed by musicians who regularly play in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan and New York City Opera orchestras and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Pool Parties in McCarren Park

One of New York City's free outdoor concert series, Pool Parties at McCarren Park features a series of bands, as well as bbq, a slip and slide and beer for sale. The concerts are all on Sunday afternoons from 3 p.m. - 8 p.m., with doors opening at 2 p.m. Admission is free, but they solicit donations to support the concerts.
