Orchard Beach is a public beach in the New York City borough of the Bronx. It is located in Pelham Bay Park on Long Island Sound. It is run and operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

The beach was created by Robert Moses by filling in approximately one third of Pelham Bay with landfill. It took a total of 1.2 million cubic yards of sand, brought by barge from Sandy Hook in New Jersey and the Rockaways in Queens to build Orchard Beach. The landfill was put between Rodman's Neck, Twin Island and Hunters Island; the latter two are no longer islands, but are now connected to the mainland Bronx by the landfill.

City Parks Foundation's Education Program
Bronx middle school students teamed up with City Parks Foundation for a lesson in going green!
In early June, 61 seventh-graders from the Young Women's Leadership School in the Bronx, got down and dirty at Orchard Beach with City Parks Foundation's educators all in the name of science. These Green Girls spent the day planting native saplings and removing overgrown invader species that harm indigenous species in the area.
Developed by City Parks Foundation, Green Girls is an innovative enrichment program that encourages girls to excel in the sciences and realize their potential to create change within the natural environment and their own lives. "The idea was to expose young women to careers in sciences, and cultivate environmental stewardship," said Claudia DeMegret, director of education.

Tribute in Light

The ethereal Tribute in Light memorial was designed to help lessen the aching loss felt across the country since 9/11. It is a profound symbol of strength, hope and resiliency.

The New Yankee Stadium

New Yankee Stadium is the working title for a new stadium for the New York Yankees, currently under construction. It will open in 2009, replacing the third-oldest stadium in the Major Leagues.

The Bronx

In popular culture 'The Bronx' has often symbolized violence, decay, and urban ruin. In fact, there are guidebooks that say you must never go to the Bronx! Sheer ignorance, that is all we have to say!
